Government of canada gets shovels in the ground in Shelburne County

Shelburne, Nova Scotia - The Government of Canada is investing more than $140,000 in key infrastructre projects in Shelburne County. The announcement was made today by Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore-St. Margaret’s, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “The Government of Canada is providing timely, targeted stimulus to communities all along the South Shore by supporting the upgrade and renewal of community facilities,” said Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore-St. Margaret’s. “Our Government’s Economic Action Plan is stimulating the economy, creating jobs, and supporting communities hit hardest by the global economic slowdown.” Today’s investments are being under the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s (ACOA) Innovative Communities Fund (ICF). Projects receiving funding include: Shelburne Historical Society: This project will provide upgrades to the Shelburne County Museum and Muir-Cox Shipbuilding Interpretive Centre. It will involve roof replacement/repair, painting, window replacement, tree removal, foundational repair and other site upkeep. The ICF contribution is $73,338. Shelburne Yacht Club: Through this investment, the club will undergo infrastructure enhancements including staircase straightening, installing a stair lift, re- covering the exposed floor area, applying wall trim and decorating, and creating a fire escape. The ICF contribution is $8,500. Shelburne Longboat Society: The Society is to construct a 864-square foot facility to preserve and promote the Shelburne Longboats as cultural icons. The ICF contribution is $59,369. Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government has invested significant new resources to strengthen Canada’s economic position. These investments are not only supporting jobs now, they will make us more competitive in the future and help Nova Scotian communities in taking steps to reduce the effect of the economic slowdown.
