Shelburne (NS)
– A project to renew a valued South Shore recreational resource is now underway, thanks to support provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a key economic stimulus initiative contained in the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore-St. Margarets, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, today announced a Government of Canada investment of $37,413 to support upgrades to the Shelburne County Arena.

“The RInC Program is all about assisting communities to make the most of their recreational assets,” said Mr. Keddy. “These investments also demonstrate the Government of Canada’s commitment to provide timely support to workers, families, communities and businesses affected by global economic downturn.”

The improvements to the arena include upgrades to the electrical system, new floor rubber, structural repairs, a new dehumidifier, and enhancements to the compressor.

“With the assistance of all levels of government, the community, the hard work and dedication of the volunteers the Shelburne Arena has undergone many improvements over the past few years,” said Tony Mahaney, President, Shelburne County Arena Association. “We will continue to work to improve the facility to provide recreation, meeting space and economic stimulus for our area into the future.”

Canada’s Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC program, to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across Canada, and to encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building. RInC projects are selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness, and must be completed before March 31, 2011. The RInC program is delivered in Atlantic Canada by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
