The government of Canada invests Stimulus Funds in Recreational Infrastructure in the Town of Lunenburg
February 26, 2010
LUNENBURG (NS) –  Lunenburg’s softball field will be upgraded with the addition of permanent fencing, dugouts and new ground material, thanks to a $6,333 investment under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program, a major component of Canada’s  Economic Action Plan.

The announcement was made today by Gerald Keddy, MP for South Shore-St. Margaret’s on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.

“Investing in the rehabilitation of community recreational facilities is an investment in the quality of life of local residents and the attractiveness of our communities as places in which to invest and grow,” said Mr. Keddy. “The funding we are making available through the RInC program is helping to generate additional local economic activity at a time of economic difficulty, supporting local jobs and ensuring Canadians will have access to valuable community infrastructure for years to come.”.

The Lunenburg project will result in the upgrade and renewal of the community’s softball field with the installation of permanent fencing, new dugouts and new ground material.

“The Town of Lunenburg is pleased with the financial support from the Government of Canada because this field is badly in need of repairs and is used extensively during the season,” said Mayor Laurence Mawhinney.

Canada’s Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years through the RInC program, to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across Canada, and to encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building. RInC projects are selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness, and must be completed before March 31, 2011. The RInC program is delivered in Atlantic Canada by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
