Bridgewater, NS – Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore – St. Margaret’s, today announced federal funding of $19,500 for the South Shore Exhibition.
“The Government of Canada is proud to support the South Shore Exhibition,” said MP Keddy. “The Exhibition has been a staple in our community since 1891. It has provided an opportunity for local farmers, artisans and companies to gain recognition for their work, while contributing to the local economy. It’s also a lot of fun! As its long history suggests, the Big Ex remains a favourite for agricultural enthusiasts, tourists, and locals alike.”
“With the support of the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage Grant, we have been able to open venues for artists and artisans to showcase their personal talents to a large crowd in a festive atmosphere,” said June Hanrahan, President of the South Shore Exhibition Commission. “This funding made it possible to add twenty-six local performers / groups to our roster that we otherwise could not afford. Many performers have not had this opportunity and are very excited. We have included young and old, from 13 years to well in their golden years.”
In September 2007, the Government of Canada announced the new Building Communities through Arts and Heritage (BCAH) program to provide Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
“Agriculture is a key component of the heritage of our region,” said MP Keddy. “I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the South Shore Exhibition Commission for helping to preserve the cultural and social foundations of our community.”
The South Shore Exhibition will take place in Bridgewater, NS from July 27 – August 1, 2010 at the South Shore Exhibition Grounds. An unveiling of a plaque to honour the West Nova Scotia Regiment who used the South Shore Exhibition grounds as a drill shed during the Second World War will take place on Saturday, July 31, 2010 just before Charlie Major’s performance. This will be a lasting memorial to those who served during that time. For more information, please visit www.thebigex.com
