GOVERNMENT OF CANADA TO INVEST $7 MILLION IN QUEENS PLACE RECREATION AND COMMUNITY CENTRE
April 16, 2009
LIVERPOOL (NS) – April 16, 2009 – The Government of Canada today announced its intention to invest $7 million in the Queens Place Recreation and Community Centre, a multi-purpose facility being built in Brooklyn to serve the area’s health and educational needs. The announcement was made today by Gerald Keddy, MP for South Shore – St. Margaret’s and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade. “The Government of Canada’s $7 million investment in Queens Place will help to build a significant asset for this community,” said Mr. Keddy. “It will also encourage residents to live active and healthy lifestyles.” “Queens Place will increase access to services for all residents of Queens through a centrally located facility,” said John G. Leefe, Mayor of Region of Queens Municipality. “This investment will also mean jobs, both during and after construction – jobs that are invaluable to our Region during these challenging economic times.” This centre will boast an NHL-sized arena with seating for 900, a walking track, a four-lane 25-metre pool, a teaching alcove and therapeutic pool, 5,000 square feet of fitness space, 5,000 square feet multi-purpose area for programs for seniors, youths, and other groups, a youth health centre, and a cultural and art space that will host exhibits, receptions, and other events. The $26 million project has already received $5 million from Nova Scotia Health Promotion and Protection, with the remainder of project costs to include contributions from community donations and the Region of Queens Municipality, which will own and operate the facility. |
